A new report by the Changing Markets Foundation—Fashion’s Plastic Paralysis: How brands resist change and fuel microplastic pollution—delivers a message the fashion industry cannot afford to ignore: most brands are not just failing to act—they’re actively resisting real change.
At PlanetCare, we’ve taken a deep look at the report and want to share the key takeaways—plus our perspective on what needs to change and how our community is already leading that shift.
What the Report Reveals
According to the report, “international fashion brands are doubling down on their use of synthetic fibres”, despite the growing evidence of their environmental and human health risks. Polyester—cheap, durable, and fossil-fuel based—is now the cornerstone of fast fashion.
- Synthetic fibres make up 69% of textiles today, projected to reach 73% by 2030.
- Polyester alone caused 125 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2022.
- In 2019, fashion contributed 8.3 million tonnes of plastic pollution, or 14% of the global total.
But this isn’t just about oceans or climate. The consequences are in our bodies.
The Health Crisis No One Talks About
The report highlights new and shocking research:
“Microplastics have been found in human placentas, lungs, blood, bone marrow, brain tissue—and even penises.”
These synthetic fibers have been linked to chronic inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and developmental harm in children. This is no longer theoretical. It’s personal. It’s happening.
And it’s not just this report. What we see here echoes the alarming findings from many other reports we've read—microplastic pollution is a growing public health crisis. The Fashion’s Plastic Paralysis report adds to a growing body of evidence that shows microplastics are not only an environmental issue—they’re a direct threat to human health.
Our Perspective: Inaction Is Not an Option
Reading this report reaffirmed what we already knew: the fashion industry is addicted to plastic—and it’s doing everything it can to protect the status quo.
But what gives us hope is this: our community is already changing things.
We know microfibers don’t just disappear. They pollute ecosystems, harm marine life, and enter the food chain. And while most brands stall, PlanetCare users are stopping up to 700,000 microfibers per wash.
Our community already counts more than 10,000 passionate individuals—people who believe in practical solutions, who care deeply about the planet, and who are taking action every day to protect it.
That’s not a small win. That’s a movement.
False Solutions: Why Recycling Isn't the Answer
Many brands in the report promote recycled polyester as a sustainable choice. But here’s what the report exposes:
“Recycled polyester is almost exclusively made from plastic bottles, which disrupts the bottle-to-bottle recycling loop.”
In short: it’s a greenwashed shortcut that doesn’t address the real issue—microplastic shedding continues and those clothes still end up in landfills or incinerators.
Only Two Brands Lead—But Even That’s Fragile
Out of 50 global brands, only two were rated as ‘leading the shift’:
- Reformation – committed to reducing all synthetics (virgin and recycled) to under 1% by 2025.
- Hugo Boss – plans to eliminate polyester and polyamide by 2030, but increased its synthetic use by 143% in recent years.
“Nearly all other brands are stuck in the ‘trailing behind’ or ‘red zone’—marked by greenwashing, vague commitments, or total silence.”
What’s Next—and How We Push Forward
The report ends with a call for accountability. It urges policymakers to regulate, consumers to demand transparency, and brands to stop hiding behind half-measures.
At PlanetCare, we’re answering that call. LOUDLY.
We’re turning everyday laundry into a tool for environmental protection.
We’re giving people power to stop microplastics at the source.
And we’re building pressure—from the bottom up—for industry and governments to act.
Because as the report makes clear: “Microplastic pollution will not be solved by voluntary pledges.” It will be solved by real action. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.
